Unity point prompt care12/24/2023 ![]() ![]() The way his relationship with his wife needed to be the story it was, end the way it did, the way Olivia fit into his life would finally make sense too. He’d look back on it on his deathbed and it would all make sense. But God had a plan and maybe everything would work out. Elliot has been a little angry with God lately, he felt he had a right to be. The one ray of light that he’d been carrying since Kathy died was his faith that taught him God had a plan. But he’s not going to scare Jet, so he turns away from the bench and says, “We should get back.” That’s when he’ll let it come back to the surface and yeah, he’ll probably hit something. He can let this ugliness raise back up later tonight, when he’s alone in his loft, after downing several generous pours of whiskey. Now, he needs to push this deep down, focus on the rest of the workday. His stomach is churning, there’s no way he can drink it now. I wasn’t here.”Įlliot stands and tosses a mostly full cup of coffee into the trash bin. Along with the realization that of course Olivia doesn’t want much of anything to do with him since he’s been back in New York. Plus, it’s indeed one of the many questions now spinning around in his brain. ![]() He and Olivia were partners for a long time, and everyone on the outside looking in assumes all kinds of things about them. “And you really didn’t?” It’s not exactly a question for him, more like a musing to herself, in wonderment.Įlliot gets that. “Yeah.” He’s not, but he doesn’t want her worried about him, so he gives her what she needs. “You OK?” Again, with the nerves in her voice. “Even better.” But it does take away the one thing he wants to hit, pummel with his fists until all his strength is gone. “And the monster is in jail?” he asks, hopeful. Does she think he was going to hit something? Or someone? Then again, his reaction, his stillness at least on the outside, is probably not the reaction she was expecting. ![]() “Ah, I think maybe 7 or 8 years ago? Can’t quite remember.” She sounds nervous. It feels like the heaviest barbell he’s ever lifted just crashed down on his chest. “It was all over the news.”Įlliot closes his eyes. Then she gave herself up a second time to him to save a kid.” Jet takes a deep breath. But if she doesn’t just spit it out, yank the fucking Band-Aid off- “Please.” “Jet.” He works his jaw, keeping his voice even, doesn’t want to yell at her because she shouldn’t be blamed for being the messenger here. “Captain Benson, well, she wasn’t a captain yet, back then-” In as few sentences as possible, please.” Whatever it is, the granular details will be the part that’ll kill him. No, no, his mind is whirling now, but he’s pretty sure that’s not a good idea. “Yeah, do you want me to give them to you?” she asks again, clearly unsure how best to handle this, to handle him. He was guessing it was something bad, but ‘case files’ means it’s even worse than he was hoping, confirming she was a victim of something. “I could give you her case files,” she says.ĭamn it. Other than it’s something to do with Captain Benson, he got that much from the confusing conversation earlier, and his stomach has been in knots since. The thing everyone besides Jet assumes Elliot knows, but he doesn’t. Only then does Jet finally say what they both know she’s here to talk about. They wait for their names to be called, grab their coffee cups, and move back outside to find a bench. They don’t say anything while they place their order and Elliot pays. “And that’s supposed to be incentive for me not to order one of those?” “If you order one of those overly sugary abominations,” he tries to sound as disapproving, grumpy-old-man-get-off-my-lawn as possible, “I won’t speak to you for at least three days.” He’s gone half a block in the direction of a Starbucks when Jet strides up next to him and falls in step. Stupidly expensive, but bad coffee, is as good of an excuse as any. The day continues around him in a haze while he sits at his desk, supposedly doing paperwork, and by mid-afternoon he needs a break that involves getting out of the damn building. Only Jet clocks his confusion about what just happened. He doesn’t understand why every head currently in the OCCB bullpen turns to him in… disbelief? But in quick succession they all revert to the screen again, and to their discussion of the case, and he tunes it out. “What?” As soon as the word comes out of Elliot’s mouth, he knows it’s a mistake. ![]()
